Ellie Jane Goulding is a British born on 30 December 1986. Her mother Tracey Goulding-Summers worked at the supermarket, while her father Arthur Goulding was a member of an undertaker family. Goulding has three siblings: a sister Isabel who is older and a brother Alex and a second sister Jordan. Alex is her brother's younger. Alex plays on the guitar. Alex also is part of a Hereford-based band. When she was young her mother encouraged her to become music teacher. As a young girl, she began learning to play the clarinet. When she was 14 she began to write her own songs but didn't begin truly singing until the college period. Goulding's fascination with electronica music began when she was pursuing her degree. She was introduced to Frankmusik who was a producer of records via MySpace. With Frankmusik's help, she created her own folktronica style. Jamie Lillywhite was a scout who stumbled upon her during this time. He initially served as manager, and later changed to A.&R. for the university contest. Lillywhite later introduced her to music producer Starsmith who helped with the release on 15 November 2009 of her first single, Under the Sheets. Starsmith later collaborated on Lights. Even though they released Under the Sheets under the label of indie Neon Gold Records she was already signed to Polydor Records.
